A prof recently shared with me that he doesn’t believe in standardized testing. His reasoning was that it is often impossible to fully test a person’s mastery of a subject with a uniform set of questions. For example, he would reason that in public school systems it’s very difficult to fully gauge the schools effectiveness by simply giving or reviewing the scores of standardized tests. These tests, he told me, only measure a response to certain facts or the content that whoever made the test deemed important. Curious thing is that in his class he gives 2 tests and a comprehensive final, these 3 tests make up about 85% of our final grade in his class…irony? Who knows…but either way its looking like I might get two B’s this semester…that’s two more than I’ve gotten in 4 years. The good news is that my wife shared some simple, humbling wisdom with me when I got home. “Life is way to ridiculously short to get stressed out about B’s sweety.” Truth.
